Creating a Standout Resume

January 20, 2025

Crafting the Perfect First Impression

A well-crafted resume is the cornerstone of a successful job search. It is often the first impression you make with a potential employer, so it is essential to ensure it speaks directly to the role you are targeting. This week, let’s explore practical and friendly tips for creating a standout resume that reflects who you are and the value you bring.

Tailor Your Resume to the Industry and Role

One of the most common mistakes job seekers make is submitting the same resume to every job. While it may seem efficient, it diminishes your chances of catching a hiring manager’s attention. Your resume should highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to the specific role and industry you are pursuing.

For instance, earlier in my career, I received a highly creative resume styled like a Campbell’s soup label. The applicant’s skills were listed as “ingredients,” and the design was undeniably eye-catching. While this resume would have been perfect for a marketing or advertising position, it was submitted for a warehouse worker role where a more traditional format would have been more appropriate. This highlights the importance of aligning your resume style with the expectations of the industry.

Stick to the One-Page Rule (Where Applicable)

As a general guideline, your resume should be one page for every 10 years of work experience. This ensures that the content is concise and focused. Recruiters and hiring managers often skim resumes, so having a clean and straightforward format is crucial. Avoid lengthy paragraphs or unnecessary details that take up valuable space. Instead, use bullet points to emphasize accomplishments and key responsibilities.

Avoid Wasted Space

Maximizing the space on your resume is critical. Large margins, excessive white space, or overly decorative designs can detract from the content and make your resume appear incomplete. Focus on including only relevant information and organize it in a way that is easy to read. Use sections like “Professional Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education” to structure your resume effectively.

Make It ATS-Friendly

Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes before they ever reach human eyes.

To ensure your resume passes through an ATS, follow these tips:

  1. Use standard fonts such as Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman.
  2. Avoid graphics, images, or non-standard formatting that ATS software may not recognize.
  3. Include relevant keywords from the job description throughout your resume.
  4. Save your file in a universally accepted format like PDF or .docx.

Let Your Resume Reflect You

Your resume is more than just a list of jobs—it’s your professional story. While it’s important to tailor your resume to the job, don’t lose sight of your unique qualities. Use language that reflects your confidence and professionalism, and make sure your accomplishments are highlighted in a way that feels authentic to you. Ask yourself: does this resume give a snapshot of my skills, passions, and what makes me stand out?

Should You Add a Photo to Your Resume?

Including a photo on your resume is a practice that I do not recommend. While it may seem like a way to personalize your application, it can inadvertently lead to bias or discrimination. Many employers prefer resumes without photos to ensure a fair and objective hiring process. Instead, let your skills, experience, and accomplishments speak for themselves. Focus on presenting a professional and compelling narrative about your qualifications without the distraction of a photo.

Highlight Your Accomplishments

When detailing your work experience, focus on accomplishments rather than just listing duties. Use quantifiable results to demonstrate your impact. For example, instead of saying, “Managed a team,” write, “Led a team of 10 employees to increase departmental efficiency by 20% over six months.”

Final Thoughts

Creating a standout resume requires effort and attention to detail, but the rewards are worth it. By tailoring your resume to the industry, keeping it concise, and ensuring it is ATS-friendly, you significantly increase your chances of landing an interview. Most importantly, make sure your resume feels like you. It should tell your story in a way that’s honest, professional, and memorable.
